Ribosomes: Important in Protein Synthesis Process

What they are - definition

Ribosomes are small granulations present in the cell cytoplasm and also in the superficial part of the endoplasmic reticulum, forming the rough (granular) endoplasmic reticulum.

Origin and composition

Ribosomes are formed from prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells of the cell nucleus. It is composed of several proteins and also by the ribosomal flagella. Ribosomes are rich in ribonucleic acid.

When acting on the cell synthesis process, the ribosomes are attached to the RNA filament, forming the polysomes.

Main functions

One of the main functions of ribosomes is to act on protein synthesis. Because the cell needs a lot of protein to develop, it has thousands of ribosomes in its cytoplasm.

Ribosomes also act on the synthesis of polypeptide chains.
